Users are advised that the Calendar contains the names of people who have died. Links in the Calendar may lead to resources that include images of people who have died.
This vital resource was first developed in 2007, and has been maintained by the AustLit and BlackWords teams since. It was revised and updated in September 2024, and is freely available to teachers, students, or anyone!
The BlackWords Calendar records many of the significant events in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history since the point of first contact through invasion, settlement, and colonisation. It includes achievements, tragedies, key figures of resistance, important moments in storytelling and publishing, and the various impacts of colonisation across this continent's modern history.
For anyone interested in incorporating this into their teaching, the updated Calendar includes lesson plans designed to help students read and interpret the Calendar, as well as guidance on creating your own Calendar around your local area.
Entries in the Calendar include links to AustLit records for futher reading and research, as well as selected links to external resources.
