I recently had a yarn about DIRRAYAWADHA (RISE UP) with Michelle Barraclough from the Writers Bookclub Podcast. We talked about writing process I offered what I hope are some practical / useful writing tips for emerging authors.
I shared some insights about weaving research, backstory and Wiradyuri language into the narrative, emphasising the importance of authors trusting themselves and their stories. We discussed my planning when it comes to my novels, which involves chapter breakdowns, character profiles, and using butcher's paper to keep organised. I spoke about the importance of pre-manuscript consultations, sensitivity reads, and the editorial process by my First Nations editor, Grace Lucas-Pennington. I also spoke about what authors need to do to avoid burnout and gain a fresh perspective, as well as tips for keeping your writing authentic and managing the emotional labour of tackling heavy historical content.
I hope some of my thoughts, experiences and tips are of use to anyone attempting to write a full-length manuscript.
